The little cherubs of Rugrats are the most unsupervised children since Charlie Brown and the Peanuts gang. They wander around an amusement park, play in a stranger's office and run off with a very expensive piece of technology. Okay, I am a parent, and the whole movie I am constantly wondering where the parents are when the kids are running amuck on their own. This movie, however, was not made for me, it was made for children.
This movie, from the Nickelodeon TV series, is about the Pickles family and their friends time spent in Paris as father Pickles attempts to fix a robotic dinosaur, Reptar. The humor in the movie comes from the diaper-wearing heroes' Parisian adventure. The heart of the movie comes from Tommy Pickles' best friend Chuckie, who spends the entire movie pining and wishing for a mommy.
The animation is the same as the TV show. Which means, in short, that it's nothing to brag about. The humor is childish as it should be. The one area where this movie excels is in the very tender story of Chuckie and his father's search for a mommy/wife. The first Rugrats movie was just a straight out kiddy adventure. This movie has adventure and heart. This is a better movie than the first.
If you're not a Rugrats fan then this movie probably won't change your opinion. You may find it refreshing, though, to actually watch a movie with your kids that has children and parents wanting and loving each other.
